Dena was born and raised in Hertford, North Carolina. In 1997, she received a Bachelor of Arts in History cum laude from Meredith College, where she was an Honors Scholar and North Carolina Teaching Fellow. Following graduation, she worked as a high school teacher at East Wake High School.

Dena graduated from Campbell University's Norman Adrian Wiggins School of Law in 2001. While in law school, she was a class representative to the Student Bar Association and was a member of several trial teams that competed nationally. She received honors for achieving the highest grade in Wills and Trusts and was inducted into the National Order of Barristers upon her graduation.

During her tenth class reunion at Meredith, Dena was named President of the Meredith College Alumnae Association, the youngest person to serve in that role since the early years of the Association. Dena also serves on the Board of Directors of Horse & Buddy, a local therapeutic riding program. She is married with two daughters. Her husband is a manager and design engineer with an international telecommunications company.
